How To Learn More About State Tax Credits

The subject of state tax credits is different than the subject of federal tax credits. After all, federal tax credits apply to everyone, while state tax credits only apply to the residents of that particular state. It would be impossible to discuss the credits in each state in one article, but it is possible to direct you to the right resources. In today's struggling economy taxpayers need all the legitimate deductions and credits they can get, however there are quite a few that go missed, which is like throwing away free money.

The first place to go when trying to learn about deductions and credits offered by your state is their official Department of Taxation website. Here you will hopefully find lots of information about credits and how to qualify for them. If you still have questions after going through their website, there should be contact information somewhere on the site so you can speak with someone over the telephone or even in person regarding your tax questions.

Another way to find out which state credits you are eligible for is to prepare your taxes using a do it yourself software program. Two examples are Tax Cut and TurboTax. These programs ask you to fill in the blanks, then they transfer information from your federal return to your state return. There may be additional state information for you to fill in but it should be nothing difficult. From there the software will actually calculate the credits you are eligible for in your state. There is nothing else to it, it is so simple any adult can complete their taxes with software like this.

The other option you have when it comes to getting the most state tax credits possible is to have a professional tax preparer do your taxes for you. These professionals must attend classes and learn a great deal before they are permitted to prepare taxes. For the most thorough job you may want to hire a tax accountant, which is a good idea if you are a business owner whose finances may be complicated. While it can cost more to hire an accountant, it can be worth it as you will get the maximum refund owed if you are owed a refund, and may be less likely to be audited as your return was prepared professionally.
